Default 99 LS1 cranks but won't catch

I've seen a couple of these threads here... My 99 Z28 sometimes will crank and crank when you turn the key but won't catch. Sometimes after 4 or 5 tries like this and it'll catch. When it does everything is fine - runs great, everything works. Other times, I turn the key, it fires right up - no problems. This is a recent problem, never saw this prior to October. Shop is having a hell of a time finding anything since its intermittant. I almost thought it was a cold weather thing since the first times it gave me problems was right when the weather started getting colder - early morning and late evening. Mid-day when it was warmer it didn't seem to have a problem. Had it out a warm day in November - never gave me a starting problem all day even making 4 or 5 different stops - that evening when the temp. dropped, it took 4 times to start. Hard to tell now since its not going above 50 all day.

May be your VATS. Has it been disabled?

If it were VATS, wouldn't the car not even crank. My 92 had a key issue once and you'd put in the bad key and get a "click" & Security Light.

It's hard to say what the problem is.... but when the problem occurs you'll have to check for fuel and spark, and then go from there.... It could be a fuel pump beginning to die, or a bad fuel pump relay, bad crank sensor, etc...

From now on I'd wait to hear if the fuel pump turns on every time you try to start the car. If you ever run into a situation where it doesn't turn on, then there's probably your issue...

Try replacing the ignition relay.

Try replacing the cam position sensor. I had this same issue last year.
