starting problem

starting problem I have a 98ls1 in chevelle and I have began noticing that sometimes it will start right up, but other times, you may have to try to crank it to or three times, and most times when it does that, it will back fire. And it just does it randomly. I know that its not a fuel prob. So any suggestions would be appreciated.
