Default Scanner?

So I understand that you can throw codes that do not set off the Service Engine Light. What is the best way to scan for codes? Going to an Advance Auto, Auto Zone etc. only have scanners to borrow that can read codes for when a light is thrown but not live diagnostics. What do you all use, cost, etc.? I'm trying to be cheap if possible.

The Tech II is the best scanner for a GM. It is the one the dealers use and is GM/Saab specific. It can retrieve codes that a generic scanner can't, like instrumentation codes. It can also activate solenoids, gauges etc. for diagnostics. The repair flow charts are also written specifically for use with a Tech II.
