Default Did I cause any damage?

Well my transmission has had a slow leak since I bought the car and probably before that. I have never noticed it until it got really low and the trans started slipping when turning hard and accelerating. That got progressively worse and I checked the fluid today, it didnt loook TOO low but I added some fluid anyway... and kept adding... and adding, it was about a quart and a half low! No wonder it felt so crappy.

My question is did I screw anything up by running it so low for so long (at least a few months) ~4-5,000 miles

edit: It's an A4 BTW

Smell the dipstick. Does it smell burnt? If so you might have some issues ahead of you. What color is the fluid on the stick? Dark brown or black is usually bad. Or at least it used to be. I haven't had an auto for a while. My daily drivers are short term leases and I never check

The fluid was a light brown (probably because its never been changed) and still smells sweet

If it doesn't smell like burnt toast, you're probably ok this time, but I wouldn't let it get that low again (don't want to press your luck)

I always checked it and thought it was ok, I guess the bottom of the hot hatches when its hot is about a quart and a quarter....
