Default check engine light, fan sensor?

I was told by the prevouis owner, that my check engine light was on because of a bad fan sensor? I am new to these cars, and dont know where the fan sensor is, or how much they cost. can I check codes with out taking it to a shop? thanks

Bring your car to AutoZone; they will scan your check engine light for free and tell you what code(s) your car is throwing.

Other places will read codes too, or if you're really out in the sticks you can buy a simple OBDII code reader online at harborfreight if you can't find anyone with scanning ability. You didn't mention any overheating/or it flashing on and off so it's probably nothing major...need to find out what the code is soon though. GM dealer is always an option too, but they'll charge you a "diagnostic fee."
