Default Power Steering Pump?

This may seem like a noob question but I've noticed that when my car (99 WS6) sits at idle about 800 RPM's or so the power steering doesn't work and I have to crank really hard to turn the wheels. When I put the car in neutral and step on the gas a bit to about 1200 RPM's the power steering seems to work. Is the pump going out finally or is it a belt or?...

Thanks

thats the pump, the gears inside are probably stripping.....just make sure you plug the lines to the rack and replace the PS pump

I'm on my second reman powersteering pump from Napa, first one leaked again, got it warrentied, now this second is leaking from somewhere. I looked underneath and every is all wet again. So now I have to get this pump warrentied. And now I don't like napa. I'm just gonna try to get my money back so I can buy a brand new one. But I noticed sometimes when I'm turning the steering wheel theres a little play before the pump engages, is that the pump or something else. The pump is also whinny and when its cold and I first start the car, its harder to turn the wheel. Any suggestions, and sorry for using your thread.

Try running an additive in the fluid, most of the time when you first fill the pump up it will have air in it for a while. Yes, it is worse when it is cold.
