Default turn signal lever replacement

i was wondering, since GM and their cheap wisdom decided that a multi function cruise switch from the 80's was sufficient on our cars but not any other vehicle if a newer one from say an S10 or somthing like that could be used in place of it. its so cheap and stupid it pisses me off. anyone attemped this?

I think most any newer one would be attached to a different style steering column so it probably won't work.

anybody replaced one with a stock one? mine completely broke. someone had their lights off one night, so i flashed them the highs, and the freaking thing stuck in high, and i had to force it back, and it bent. so i lived without high beams, after awhile one signal would blink, one would not, so i moved the arm manually. and it finally just popped loose after awhile and now i have no turns. i got the wipers to work, but the assembly just hangs. and it looks like a pita to replace.
