It's best to use distilled water regardless of which coolant type you use. That goes for Dexcool, green, whatever.

I have always used distilled water. All minerals have been removed from it, which is why it tastes so bad. Tap water or drinking water has minerals in it, which can clog up your tubes and cake on your engine. It is not that expensive, and worth avoiding the risk of the minerals.

A gallon of distilled water is less than a buck, and it took me about 8-10 drains to run clear - I drain the radiator and pull a heater hose to drain a little more. It's a little time consuming, but it's not that bad.

Water Quality
The integrity of the coolant is dependent upon the quality of DEX-COOL(R) and water. DEX-COOL(R) is a product that has enhanced protection capability as well as an extended service interval. These enhanced properties may be jeopardized by combining DEX-COOL(R) with poor quality water. If you suspect the water in your area of being poor quality, it is recommended you use distilled or de-ionized water with DEX-COOL(R).
The best way to flush is to drain, remove thermostat, refill with clean water or distilled water, run it up to operating temperature, drain again, refill again, run again, then drain, replace thermostat, refill with new coolant and clean or distilled water.
