Rotate the engine over to #1 tdc. Hold distributor in hand and turn rotor to point where #1 terminal would be and note direction of oil pump drive at bottom of shaft. Look down dist hole and using a long straight blade screw driver, turn oil pump drive where needed and drop dist in.

Easier way and not really recommended, if motor didn't rotate and you know distributor is pointing where it should be, have someone bump the engine over while your holding dist down. It will eventually fall onto the oil pump drive.

The distributor shaft turns the oil pump shaft on a gen 1. The slots aren't matching up on the shafts, so you need to stick flat head screwdriver down hole and rotate oil pump shaft in order for it to mate w/ distributor shaft.
