Default Headlamp grinding

The other night one of my headlights wouldnt pop up on my 98 Trans Am so i manually raised it and played with the connections and it started to work again except now it'll raise fine and when i close it, it sounds fine until it gets all the way closed then sounds like the motor is still trying to close the lamp and it just grinds until i turn the light back on and pop it up. The only way i could get by this is by disconnecting the power to the lamp so it stayed up and then i was finally able to shut my lights off. Any idea on what this could be? I wouldn't think its the gears because they sounds fine.
