SES on only when i go slow

SES on only when i go slow my SES light never comes on when i start my car up and bomb around town. but when i turn it on and drive off campus at night, it comes on. it only seems to come on when i go slow. i tested it a couple times and went slow down the main road after leaving campus and it came on. i am confused as to why this is. i went to auto zone and they told me they could only check the codes for a 96 and up, so my 94 was out of luck. any ideas or input would be great.
