water pump going bad?

water pump going bad? Recently when i've been driving around, the water? temp gauge will go almost or into the red and the check gauges light will come on, After a few minutes it wil go off and the temp will go back to normal. The heat up usually happens during idle or low cruising speeds. I think its the water pump cause when i drive, especially when you press the gas a bit and in first or second gear at low accel there's a whining noise coming from the engine bay.
What do you guys think this is?

i'm not sure, it seems like they're working cause whe i turn the car off sometimes they'll remain on for awhile, and im pretty sure there was no manual fan switch installed so they should be coming on automatically i assume?
