Default LQ-4 oil cooler

My LQ-4 motor came with the adapter off the oil filter housing for an external oil cooler. The lines were cut when the yard removed the motor from the vehicle. Are these factory type coolers just an in out design or are the resticted in anyway?? Are they thermostatically controlled? I would just like to add some lines to a cooler , hook the thing up and use it. Anyone have experience with these?? Thanks
