Default SES light; fans not working properly. Help!

This is happening on my 96 v6 daily driver. SES light came on. My friend scanned the code but unfortunately I did not get the exact code from him. He just said that is was a problem w/the electric fans. The fans come on when I turn on the AC or defroster, but shuts off after about 30 sec. Apparently the fans should stay on as long as the AC is on. The fan doesn't come on at all when the temp climbs past 215 (remember: iron v6 not an LS1) and it used to barely waver past 180. He said to replace the fan relays which I did but that didn't fix it. One of my other friends said I could just put in a manual fan switch but I want the car fixed right. Any suggestions (besides just getting rid of the slow *** v6)?

Aren't there any mechanics on this site :p
I've just bypassed all the relays for now so that the fan is on whenever the ignition is on, but that won't work so well when it gets cold out
There's gotta be some temp. sensor to tell the fans to kick on. Any help with this...anyone???
I know this question is about a v6 , but I do have an LS1 car too
