Default What exhaust?

I'm new to 4th gens, but not new to LS1s per say. I'm just doing a bit of research now, as I will hopefully be picking up a 98-99 'SS in the next two weeks, once I sell my truck. One of the only mods that I will do until my '68 is done will be exhaust. I want the car to be loud, and am considering going with the SLP loudmouth, but I've heard it can be too loud, if there's such a thing. My next choice would be the Borla cat-back, or possibly a borla XR-1 with the slp exhaust, (borlamouth). Any opinions or ideas? I want the car to be loud, but not to the point where I'm getting tickets and hassled all the time, plus this will be my DD. I definitely want people to hear the LS1, though.

Thanks,
Ralph

I say go with the LM. I am very happy with it. When I get headers I might think about replacing the resonator with a XR1 but we'll see. Anyway, check out the stickey with the exhaust sounds, that will give you some idea.

I would go with the GMMG. I have one of the Flowmaster catback systems on mine and it's 3" all the way and it sounds good but the more I hear the GMMG I like it even better. The loudmouth really sound good, but sounds better with a lopey cam. Just my opinion.

Ls1sounds.com has a lot of clips too. i have the loudmouth and personally i love it. really liked the flowmaster that was one before too, just wanted something a little louder. make sure you take in to consideration your future mods when picking one though.

If you have the money then go for it, you wont regret it.

Cost for exhaust is $700.....oval tips are extra $150

i have the slp LM and love it. When the car was running I would get a little rasp now and then, but I can live with it. My new set up will be JetHot LT's, ORY, and LM... That set up should be loud enough to scare a redneck!

your gonna get 50 billion different answers since exhaust is subjective. i personally think LM sounds like **** and GMMG is overated, but alot of people like them so to each there own. i had magnaflow and it was nice catback, but i dumped it for true duals. bottom line is hear as many different exhaust setups in person and come to your own conclusion.

True duals again...I really like the setup I'm doing. 2.5" all the way through, x-pipe, Flowmaster 10 series single chamber mufflers, dumped before the axle. Good stuff...loud but not too loud...has that old muscle car sound.

I vote true duals! The problem with that is that it works best if you get them with headers.Listen to as many as you can in person. I had the loudmouth for 18 months and I liked it a lot but I LOVE my duals and will NEVER have a Y-pipe again. The GMMG is nice but IMO it just costs too much for a cat-back, for the price of it you can essentially get a pair of headers AND true duals . You should be happy with the loudmouth so long as you keep the cats I think, it's really not all THAT loud.

Hey guys,

I checked out the TSP true duals, and it looks nice, the price is fair too.

Hypothetical question, considering I don't even have the car yet (still need to sell my truck) could I just cut the stock exhaust and let it dump right before the rear? Would I still pass emissions?

Am I going to pass with the LM, or TSP dual?

TIA, I don't know much about emissions testing. I'm in NY.

TSP you will need to add cats, and you will not pass with out some kind of muffler(cut off). Loudmouth, you will have trouble passing if you have a a$$ hole doing your inspection. They will consider that a glass pack or something. If they do not do the sniff test, then more then likely they will not get under the car to see the mufflers.

Okay cool, I guess I'll have to find a cool guy to inspect it. Thanks.

The Loudmouth is federal emissions compliant. The only way you would have a problem passing with it is if say your county/city/etc has restrictions regarding modifiying a vehicle and making it louder. Emissions testing is just that: emissions testing. Your muffler has exactly ZERO influence on emissions. I have absolutey no problem passing with my exhuast.
