Angry Ignition or Starter?

My car wouldn't start the other day and I think I cooked my starter and made it short out. Here's what's going on: Car keeps popping the 50 amp ignition fuse whenever I go to turn it over. if i don't turn the key all the way forward it doesn't pop the ignition fuse (i had to roll start it to get it home from my friend's house). I have hooker longtubes and a mufflex Y-pipe on the car. I called my old boss (service manager at a chevy dealership) and he told me that it sounds like I shorted the starter out. I already checked all of the battery cables and stuff that runs near the headers and they're all fine. Can any of you guys think of anything else I should try before I start pulling the starter out?

Thanks guys!

Didn't think of that, we had an ice storm here today so I'm gonna do that first thing.

Check the wiring down at the starter also, more directly the purple wire.

Sounds like the winding in the starter is shorted to ground. First check the wiring to the starter as mentioned above...make sure they are tight and free of corrosion and also make sure you have no opens in the wires.
