Please tell me why this isnt true
Why do true duals on V8 engines not sound like two 4 cylinder engines? Is it because of the displacement?

Re: Please tell me why this isnt true
Alittle 4-cylinder engine has a light rocipitating assembly(crank/rods/pistons) & rev much faster than a v-8 rocipitating assembly. + in a 4-cycle engine the motor must turn over 720 degrees (two revolutions) to fire all cylinders. So a 4 cylinder fires 2 cyl. every rev. , a 6 cyl. fires 3, & a 8 cylinder fires 4.Firing orders also have an influance on exhaust tones but is way complicated. But you get the idea.

It's because they are slower. You know the Doppler effect is the function of velocity right, which is just accerlation multiplied by time. Seeing how time is constant it means that because 4 cylinder cars accelerate slower, they sound different.
But then again it's all relative, which would mean that it doesn't matter what engine you have just as long as you're fast. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

**None of the above is to be taken seriously or as fact when it comes to the way physics really work**

Yup what wrencher said. There are 2 4 cylinder power plants that I know of that sound similar to a v8. Both of which are in motorcycles: Honda VFR 750/800 and the Yamaha V-Max. Both have unusual V-4 engines.

I thought it was because most V8 true dual setups have a crossover pipe at some point to even out hte pulsing. Have heard the orginal Viper RT/10s with the sidepipes and its sounds very farty. Supposedly they fixed this on the new ones by adding a crossover pipe.
