My A/C belt slipped off and shredded!

My A/C belt slipped off and shredded! My ? might be a stupid one, but is that the only thing that belt runs, and is it ok to drive with out it, untill I get to the auto shop?

Cool, I thought so, but just needed some assurance. Thanks. It's a pretty new belt any I deas what could have made it slip off?
