first off you shouldnt have to recharge it, unless you diconnected something.you should check for leaks. there is a dye that you put in the system that you dont need a light for it comes out red,it also contains refigerant so consider that when charging. also when charging the system the car should be running and the ac system should be on high including the fan. there is a sticker on the box by the firewall that gives you the specs on poundage. do yourself a favor buy one of those kits that include a gauge it might not be as acurate as a shops but will give you a close reading.

unless it's empty knowing how much it holds (usualy 2 pounds) isn't going to help you. I never ever recomend AC as a DIY project. Take it to a machanic. There is a whole lot to AC that could get you into trouble if you do it wrong. It's only going to cost you a little bit for them to check it out and see whats wrong.

bring it to someone with a machine

Since your system was opened up you need to pull vaccuum on it to boil out any water vapor in the system. You need to pull roughly 28inches of vacuum for 30 minutes. Technically speaking, anytime a system is opened you should also replace the receiver/drier.
