Default Bad misfire or back fire. Check valve?

Lately my TA has been sounding kind of weird. Everytime I drive it and let go of the gas pedal the exhaust would make this weird sound. And this was at low speeds(30-50 MPH). So today i decided to give her a little workout on the expressway. Once on the expressway I go wot and as soon as let go of the gas pedal I start hearing loud multiple misfires. It sounded like a driveby. It was loud and embarrassing. So I took it to Firestone for a diagnostic check. I would have taken it to autozone but I didn't ses light. So after a couple of hours waiting they tell me according to the scan I need to get both check valves replaced. Does this sound right to you guys? If so, would it be easy for me to do it myself? Would a check valve cause all that popping sound?
