K&N vs. stock air filter - HP vs. CFM flow question
We all have read that the paper filters in our 98-02 Fbodies will supply the car with enough CFM of air for max performance of our engines stock. That is b/c our air boxes were designed to allow air to flow through the entire surface of the filter. My question is this....
When we mod our LS1s to produce more HP and TQ it needs more air and fuel to perform properly. When we do cam/heads swaps, FI, etc. At what HP/TQ numbers N/A or FI does the LS1 start to require more air than the surface area of the standard paper filter can supply and cause a pressure drop/resistance in flow? In other words, how much HP/TQ can someone run a paper filter before the engine requirements exceed its CFM flow rating?
Second part of the question....is the K&N the best filter to upgrade to? How does it compare to the Holley, Accel, and Fram airhog? The reason why I use a paper filter is I was concerned about the oil contamination on my MAF from the K&N I used to use.

Its a good question, I am curious to know the answer. I ran the K&N for a while and swapped it for a paper filter as well. If I ever go back to a more free flowing filter it would be the Holley, I have never heard anything bad about their filters. I just didnt want to take the chance and over oil my old K&N. TTT for ya.

I got 319.7hp with an old fairly dirty paper filter and 324.7 with no filter. This was on a basically stock '02 WS6. I plan to stay with the paper, just change it more frequently.
