I have before not on my camaro but on my 88 Monte SS. It will burn off and stink for awhile but i believe a certain amount will stay on and protect against rust. I've had mine on my 88 for 3 years with very little rust they still have a black tint to them(i used black paint) if the car is driven regularly they probably won't rust bad you will have slight surface rust but that's it. I also live in FL and all i have to deal with is rain no snow or salt which will make them rust much faster. Paint in no way will equal any kind of coating but i believe will help some with rust. They will smoke for awhile while the paint burns but that should go away.
