Default Oxygen Sensors

My MPG has dropped a bit, and im getting fuel smells from my tailpipes, the car is also stuttering sometimes on initial firing, im thinking it might be O2s. The cost is like $55 each, and im broke, just had to pay a traffic ticket. Is there a way to test them to make sure they are the problem? Anyone know a procedure or a writeup location? Thanks in advance,
John

Is your SES light on? If so go to your local AutoZone for a free scan to find out what is codes are being thrown.

you won't necessarily throw a code if your sensors are busted. mine never threw an SES code but I replaced them with Bosch 13111's and the car seems to run more smoothly down the road. You can log sensor voltage over time and see if they tend to stick to either the +1V or 0V rails, but that's not necessarily an indicator of them being bad. It's basically a crapshoot.

Hmm, Well how long do they typically last? Car has 60K miles, I think tehy are the originals, and the car has had headers the past few thousand miles. Thanks

Headers are usually enough to kill O2 sensors...get used to replacing them. Some cars have an affinity for eating O2 sensors.
