Default different ways to install shift light?

I wasn't sure what forum this should go in, but i saw ignition as a description for this. so, would it be possible to install the shift light into wires that go to the guage cluster? I already know that you're supposed to go through the firewall on the passenger side, but this just seems like a better idea that is possible. I tried searching and have seen this asked before, but never had a anwser.
