Default AIR valve?

The dealer says I have a bad 'AIR Valve' as opposed to a Check Valve. Anyone know what that is and where it is located?

That's what I thought so I asked. The svc writer said he asked the same question. The tech said no, I mean air valve not check valve.

As far as I know the system consists of an air pump, check valves, pipes off the manifolds, and hoses.

The pump has an integral stop valve and there is also a vacuum bleed valve. Could be either of these, my bet would be the bleed valve. (In the pipes between pump and check valves.) When it fails you probably won't get adequate airflow and you'll fail the diagnostic. Any codes?

In March the code was P0130. They replaced the AIR pump vacuum valve PN 12563355. Today the car was in for code P1416. They replaced the passenger side check valve PN 22097057.

I believe the AIR pump vacuum valve is the part just above number 7 cylinder. Is this the part you're describing ToplessTexan?

Here, make your determination from this. This is EXACTLY what the technician would follow if he did this correctly.

Circuit Description
A secondary air injection (AIR) pump is used on this vehicle in order to reduce the tail pipe emissions during start-up. The powertrain control module (PCM) supplies a ground to the AIR pump relay, which energizes the AIR pump.

The PCM monitors the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) voltages in order to diagnose the AIR system.

During the AIR test, the PCM activates the AIR pump during closed loop operation. When the AIR is activated, the PCM monitors the HO2S voltages and monitors the short-term fuel trim values for both banks of the engine. If the AIR system is operating properly, the HO2S voltages should go low, and the short term fuel trim should go high.

If the PCM determines that the HO2S voltages for both banks did not respond as expected during the tests, DTC P0410 sets. If only one sensor responded, the PCM sets either a DTC P1415 for bank 1 or P1416 for bank 2 in order to indicate on which bank the AIR system is inoperative.

Conditions for Running the DTC
- DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0131-P0135, P0137, P0138, P0140, P0141, P0151-P0155, P0171-P0175, P0200, P0300, P0325, P0327, P0332, P0335, P0336, P0351-P0358, P0430, P0500, P0502, P0503, P1133, P1134, P1153, and P1154 are not set.
- The engine operates for more than 30 seconds.
- The engine run time is more than 20 seconds after closed loop operation.
- The engine speed is more than 850 RPM.
- The maximum air flow is 22 g/s.
- The ECT is between -10°C (14°F) and 110°C (255°F).
- The IAT is between -10°C (14°F) and 100°C (212°F).
- The ignition voltage is more than 11.7 volts.
- The engine load is less than 40 percent.
- The air fuel ratio is 13.125:1.
- The engine is not operating in power enrichment mode OR in deceleration fuel cut-off mode.
- The short term integrators are monitored while in fuel trim cells 1, 2, 5, or 20.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
- When the AIR pump turns ON during closed loop operation, the HO2S voltage does not go below 222 mV for 0.9 seconds.
- When the AIR pump turns ON during closed loop operation, the short term fuel trim does not change more than a predetermined value.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the diagnostic runs and fails.
- The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The control module stores this information in the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
- The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.
- A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.
- A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic.
- Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids
- An obstruction in the exhaust manifold may restrict the amount of air flow that is necessary to affect the HO2S voltage. If you suspect this condition, remove the air pipe from the manifold and inspect the passage.
- For an intermittent condition, refer to Intermittent Conditions .

Test Description
The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

3) A check valve that flows in both directions causes heat damage to the AIR system components.

Step 1

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls?
--
Yes: Go to Step 2
No: Go to Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls

Step 2

Important
Before proceeding with this diagnostic table, ensure that the AIR pump is operating and that air is present at the outlet of the AIR pump. If the AIR pump is inoperative, refer to DTC P0410 for further diagnosis.

1) Install a scan tool.
2) Idle the engine in Closed Loop.
3) Turn OFF all of the accessories.
4) Monitor the HO2S voltage display for the applicable bank on the scan tool.
5) Enable the AIR system using a scan tool.
6) Observe and record the HO2S voltage while the AIR system is enabled.

Does the HO2S voltage drop below the specified value?

Specified Value = 350 mV
--
Yes: Go to Diagnostic Aids
No: Go to Step 3

Step 3

Inspect all hoses and pipes for:

- Proper connections
- Secure clamps on the pipes and on the hoses
- No kinks, holes, or pinched hoses or pipes
- Components with evidence of heat damage

Did you locate the condition?
--
Yes: Go to Step 6
No: Go to Step 4

Step 4

1) Disconnect the hose from the applicable check valve at the exhaust manifold.
2) Enable the AIR system using a scan tool.

Is air present at the hose outlet?
--
Yes: Go to Step 7
No: Go to Step 5

Step 5

Repair the restriction or blockage in the applicable AIR hoses and pipes between the exhaust manifold and the point where the system branches to both sides of the engine.

Is the action complete?
--
Yes: Go to Step 8
--

Step 6

Repair the condition.

Is the action complete?
--
Yes: Go to Step 8
--

Step 7

Replace the applicable check valve. Refer to Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Check Valve/Pipe Replacement - Bank 1 or Secondary Air Injection (AIR) Check Valve/Pipe Replacement - Bank 2 .

Did you complete the replacement?

Yes: Go to Step 8

Step 8

1) Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs.
2) Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
3) Start the engine.
4) Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.

Does the DTC run and pass?
--
Yes: Go to Step 9
No: Go to Step 2

Step 9

With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info.

Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed?
--
Yes: Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List
No: System OK</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Now, Step 7 looks to be the one, so I linked to that and this is what I got;

Removal Procedure

Caution
Allow the engine to cool before servicing the secondary air injection AIR system in order to reduce the chance of severe burns.

1) Remove the check valve hose clamp.
2) Disconnect the AIR hose from the check valve.
3) Unscrew the check valve from the AIR pipe.
4) Remove the left AIR pipe from the manifold.
5) Before replacing a check valve, test the valve for proper operation.
A) Install a vacuum pump to the nipple side of the check valve, on the AIR pump side.
B) Pump the vacuum pump to 10 inches Hg, and observe the gage.
C) If the vacuum bleeds down to zero within 5 seconds, replace the check valve.

Installation Procedure

Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.


1) Screw the check valve onto the AIR pipe. Tighten
Tighten the check valve to the AIR pipe to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

2) Connect the AIR pipe to the exhaust manifold. Tighten
Tighten the AIR pipe to the exhaust manifold to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

3) Install the AIR hose to the check valve.
4) Install the check valve hose clamp.
5) Check the AIR system for proper operation.</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">These check valves they are referring to are the risers off your exhaust manifolds/headers that have a diaphragm looking device that are held down with two 10mm bolts. Bank 2 is identical to this, just the other side.

Wow what a procedure! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="gr_eek2.gif" /> Looks like someone has access to internal info. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> CMNTMXR57 are you a GM tech? I noticed today the new check valve was making some noise for awhile at startup. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />
