Default Timing Tuner and other such products. Are they reliable??

I want to run 150-250 shot on a 382 stroker LS1. I can have MTI reduce timing via the computer, but obviously this reduces engine hp/tqe at all times. Do products like the Timing Tuner by Ramchargers actually work, or do they "trick" the computer with resistance, etc. Has anyone actually used this and then had is on a dyno to be looked at by LS1EDIT and wideband to see how the nitrous works with this type of timing retard. I hate the idea of having the timing retarded all the time. ANy input would be appreciated. I have experience with L98 style motors, but none with LS1 engines. I know that retarded timing would heat up an L98 style engine when not using nitrous.
