Default why cant i find the right starter ???

well i made a trip to auto zone last week and specifiacally said i need a starter for a 99 camaro z28 and they gave me one that didnt even have the same bolt holes...so i went back with the old starter and they found one that they thought matched ..and visually lookeed like it did...but it appears its a little bigger and the bolt holes are off by centimeters...im sure i had 3 difrents freinds crawl under and try to align it.....my question is do they make a starter almost the same but just a little dif ?? i cant understand that..or am i just no inclined enough to line it back uP ?? we got the old one in and out to make sure ?? any one have any suggestions

Try going to another parts store. Autozone might have the wrong number or something. You might also pick one up from a salvage yard or :gasp: the stealership.
