Best way to clean the blocks deck?
I just pulled my stock LS1 heads off, and the bottom part of the head gasket is stuck to the block. What's a good chemical to losen up the bond so I can scrap it off with?
And is there anything that works good for cleaning the carbon off the top of the pistons?

i am in general motors asep student(gm technician in training). and have done several heads/cam builds and ls1 builds. i have asked about chemicals and wiz wheels and every possible way to clean the deck surface of the ls1 block. being that it is aluminum you dont use wiz wheels or chemicals.
use a razor blade. at the correct angle it will take care of any of the build up of the factory head gasket. and if you take your time you can get it all off.
trust me it seems like alot of work but its a very critical mating surface.
hope this helps.

and the carbon on top of the piston.. fuel injector service or seafoam does the trick. bu the motor has to be running to do this.
