How to get the crank bolt loose with the motor out of the car? It spins
Right now thats my problem and I haven't really messed with it yet. The motor is out of the car and I need to get the crank pulley off. Well, the bolt is obviously in there pretty good and the motor spins freely when I turn it. I realize the spark plugs aren't in right now, so it makes it really easy to spin. Once I put them in, it'll be harder, but still spin. What do I have to jamb and how to get it to stop spinning so I can break it loose?

Usually the impact gun is best the "vibrations" shock the bolt loose, not the torque. If that doesn't work use a breaker bar, with the flywheel is on the car you can hold it with a flywheel holder or a pry bar, with no flywheel, put #1 @ TDC, lower clockwise (past TDC) 1/2 turn, insert 2' of clothesline, slowly rotate counterclockwise until motor stops and tug away. I've done it dozens of times and never has a problem. (Old Subaru timing belt trick).

this is how i did it.
my engine was on a small stand that bolts to the motor mounts and the bell housing holes. i bolted the flywheel to the engine and used a long cap head bolt threaded backwards into the flywheel (clutch mounting hole) and braced the head of the bolt to the rear of the block. thats all that was needed to get that bolt loose. ended up using the jack handle on a breaker bar.

Well guys...I got it off and I almost for got about this post!
Here's how: Heat the pulley up with one of those propane torch bottles. Don't put heat directly to the bolt or the rubber ring in the pulley. I basically heated up the spokes and the perimiter for about 3 minutes, mainly the spokes. It doesn't get glowing red at anytime. Once I did that, I used my same impact gun that couldn't get it before. It probably took less than a second, I mean it came off right away! What the heat does is expand the metal. By heating the pulley, it makes the crank expand making the bolt not as tight.
