Default 1.8hrs to replace the crank bolt?

I was quoted 1.8hrs to replace a crank bolt. Doesn't that seem excessive? They said they need to remove the starter and install a special piece of hardware to keep the crank from moving while they torque it down.

Im guessing this is a dealership. They will put the special tool in place of the starter on to lock the flywheel..then Tq it to specs with a Tq wrench. Thats why it takes so long. Its about right if you go by the book.

Actually..still going by the book it shouldnt take more than 45 min. But you know dealerships.

Why not do it yourself? If the bolt is all you are replacing it should only take about 15 minutes, give or take. Put the car in 4th or 5th gear and take the bolt out yourself. It will be in there pretty good, but its manageable. Thread in the new bolt by hand and then torque it down to 37 ft-lbs. Then take a breaker bar and turn it an additional 140 degrees. It really isn't very hard. Especially since your not messing with taking the pulley off. Even then, its not hard.

Why would they have to take off the starter and use a special tool when you have an M6? Plus taking off the starter is about a 2 min. job.

I sure the hell wouldn't pay about $100 for a bolt (1.8 x $60)

Kinda related question:

Can the pulley be removed with the radiator in the car?

I ask because I already pulled my radiator assembly out twice. I was going to install an underdrive pulley when I did my cam, but no one had any in sotck... I would love to install a pulley in the future, but I'd hate to have to drain the cooling system again...

Thanks!

Tommy

So Mobe, is that how you can get it torqued to 215 ft lbs?

I dont even do that...I just Impact the living crap out of it. It would take me less that 2 minutes to swap out a new crank bolt.

Yeah, no need to remove the starter. Put it in 6th gear and put the parking brake on. Car shouldn't move (if it does, have someone hold the brakes).

Of course, the Impact works really well if your not **** about torque specs.

The current bolt was torqued with a 250lb-ft torque bar on an air rachet. Been having some belt walking issues and chirping, so I thought I'd start by making sure it was torqued down right since the bolt is supposedly cheap to replace

It's not a dealer, but it's a performance shop which does warranty work as well. They apparently go by the book when it comes to labor.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Oh, I'm in Orlando, 383.

I thought he was just replacing the bolt. If he is trying to re-seat the pulley, then he needs to torque the old bolt as close to 240 as possible. Then do as I said in the first post.

I have the GM tool to hold the flywheel. You can put a M6 into 5th and swap the bolt, or use the tool.

From start to finish, pulling down the starter, with air tools, on a rack the swap takes 10 minutes being careful.

John - How much was the tool? Do you have a part number or would you be willing to let me borrow it? I may be putting my stock pulley BACK on for a new little toy I'm getting.

Don't know the price, but the part number is J42386. They will call it a flywheel holding tool. However, as suggested above, if it's a M6, just put it in a tall gear and set the E-brake.

1999 - Thanks, I've got an auto so climbing under the truck and jamming a 3/8" extension in through the inspection cover hole gets real old, especially when it keeps falling out.

Will the flywheel tool from Checkers work? It has the same basic design, but I ask due to the "specialty" size and/or configurationof the LS1. TIA.

Charlie.

It wont work, the one at checkers is totally different.

I used to have one, they cost 56.00 - then I gave it to 'someone' to let people use it that needed it because they were a b1tch to get a hold of. Funny thing is when I needed to borrow it back that 'someone' couldnt find it but now it looks like they have..
