Default whining sound

I have a 2001 Trans Am WS6 and I have a whining coming from somewhere under the engine compartment. Its been making this noise since I bought the car and I have already changed the power steering pump to no avail. The noise grows louder as the engine RPMs rise, and I cannot seem to pinpoint it. Im thinking maybe something is low on fluids like the tranny, its a six speed. Anyone else have this problem?? Thanks in advance.

Can you get a sound clip up?

I'd say to start by listening to your pulleys/tensioners.. I've got one going out and it speaks a bit until the car funs for a bit and it gets good and warm..

Does the whining ever go away?

no its always there. the higher the revs the higher the whine, it honestly sounds like a supercharger from outside the car. inside it sounds like an 03 cobra.

Well it sucks that nobody installed a Procharger while you were sleeping to be nice.

But to get back on topic. The first thing I would have guessed was your power steering pump. The second thing would be one of the pullies in your serpentine belt system.

But like the above poster said try to get a sound clip of it.. That may help some people here diagnose the issue for you.

I would leave it! My guess is the altenator.

it sounds just like that but its easier to hear inside the car, as ive tried just tugging on the TB a little bit and I cant hear it when im under the hood. im gonna take the alternator off and test it on the bench tester at work and see if its the culprit and go from there.

I ran my C5 Vette like that for two years before I sold it.
It was never an issue and never became super loud.
It did sound very much like a supercharger but not as loud.
I only noticed it while not driving or going very slow.
once past 15 to 20mph, I could not hear it and while stopped, if I revved it high, the exhaust was way louder than the noise.
I guess it might be an issue if the bearing was to seize though.

My 1st '99 T/A did that from brand new. I think it is a bearing in the transmission. It made that noise in lower speeds from 1st through 3rd gear. It always sounded like a blower car from outside. It never got any worse so I left it alone.

I say alternator too. Mine has actually made noise since i bought the car and 30,000 miles later its still going good. I wonder if getting them wet from washing the engine bay or something causes this??

I would take both belts off and start it up, the battery should be fine without the alternator for a while. Then you will know if it involves belt driven accessories/idlers or not.
