By alignment dowel I assume you mean the dowel to hold the lifters up??? Or the dowel pin on the end of the camshaft that aligns the cam gear?? Either way the answer is no. How do you know how to install the camshaft w/o the dowel pin in place?

I was thinking line the hole up in the cam where the dowel should be with the hole in the gear. Guess the cam is coming back out.

In theroy, IF you lined everything up correct, dot to dot and you can see the hole for the dowel match up, you should be fine BUT fighting with the timing chain and the cam since it likes to sit back in the motor until its bolted the cam sprocket is a bitch.

Its honestly MUCH easier to have one, is it needed, not really but its a PITA w/o one.
