Default Why such a range on cam bolt torque specs for three bolt gear?

Most all torque values are one fixed number but then we have the cam gear torque spec of like 18 to 26..does this depend on cam type or something? Why such a range on this one thing alone? What do most of you guys use for torque?

I have not seen this range, service manual (from memory) is 26. However, the old style cam retainer plate is 18 (new style with countersunk holes is different).

The 99 service manual calls out 26 lb ft, so use that
