Lifter Buckets
tried a search on holding cups, lifter buckets and did not come up with much.
i have not had the heads off an LSx but i am going to lose my virginity next
week.
i've got a pair of patriot S2 heads and gm perfomance lifters to install.
i put a small cam in this car in march after rotating the engine the lifters
all stayed up on 2 rotations and i slide in some cold roll to make sure they did not fall. is this the main purpose of the lifter buckets to hold the lifters up?
on gen one flat tappet cams the lifters can be stubburon with the burr edge
and the varnish. varnish should be the only hold back on a roller cam.
if the bucket indexes the roller to the cam i need to get some asap.

The lifter trays are there to keep the lifters straight and properly orientated with the cam. The roller lifters have two flat edges at the top which slide into the lifter trays and keep the actual roller on the lifter straight with the cam lobe. If you don't have the lifter trays in (and i dont think the lifters will even sit in the block without them) then the lifters will just spin around and eventually, if not initially on start up, mess your cam and valvetrain all up.
Hope this helps. It is kind of hard to visualize this but if you see it you will understand what im saying.

It's cheap insurance to put in new ones when you have the heads off, as COJO_24 said they do keep the roller square on the cam. If you need them fast just get them from the stealership.
Here is the LS1/LS6 version, the ones I used. You need 4 of them:

Some people say the LS2 version is better, this is it:
