Default newbie help with cam choice?

I a looking for a cam for a buddies 2001 Z28 6 speed. conv. w/34,000 mile. He only drives it on the weekends and to test and tune night at the drag strip to run for fun. He has just started to fix it up it has full 3" cat back exhuast, slp lid, 18" Zo6 rims, but has plans for suspension work, tb, maf, f.a.s.t. intake soon. He will be getting all the bolt-ons and will probably never put new heads on the cars.

I was thinking of using The Texas Speed 228R 228/228 .588/.588 Camshaft 114.

What cam would be best for a car?
Are stock valve springs ok to use?

that would be a good choice for the cam. you will have to upgrade the springs, the newer style comp 918's should work fine (good to .625 lift). is the car an m6 or a4? if its an a4 he will want to get at least a 3500 stall

I just bought that cam & installed it in mine. You will need better springs. If you decide to go this route, I suggest getting the cam package that includes the stock length hardened pushrods, & the PRC dual spring kit with valve seals & titanium retainers. I paid $689 for it at Texas Speed, & thats really a very good deal. I checked around, no one else sells this package for this price. I also bought the LS6 ported oil pump, timing cover & water pump gaskets, ARP balancer bolt(highly recommend) makes it easier to install your balancer because its slightly longer. I bought an LS2 timing chain in the classifieds. I will post up the numbers Friday after I get it dynotuned. So far I like it.
