Default measureing pushrod length

this kind of seems like common sense but i guess you need to push the pushrod downwards onto the lifter and move the lifter down until it contacts the camshaft? i hope that makes sense....

Yes. The trays will hold the lifter up (after all that is how the cam is swapped) so when you rotate the motor the lifter won't follow the cam lobe as lift decreases and will stay up in the tray.
