Default What is an acceptable price for a cam install?

I bought a cam and I was wondering who do get to do it. I got the cam, springs, timing chain, push rods, and ls6 oil pump. What have you guys paid for this amount of work? Just curious. I don't want to get screwed.

LOL, I agree, let me second this! A cam install is the most bonding thing you can do with your car!

Can a person with an acceptable knowledge of engines and LS1's, who has read the install directions 10-20 times, be able to install a cam?

let me tell you, i had abosolutely NO car experience EVER (never even changed a plug or wire in my 2 previous vehicles) and i've done a h/c/i swap with the help of that guide. as long as you have the tools, patience, and time i stand firm that anybody can do it.

I did mine with the guide as well. I have done all the work on my car but the clutch. If you have the time and the tools you can do it. I do think you also have to want and like to do stuff like this as well, it helps.

It would cost around $500 up here in New England area.

A cam install is not very hard but does take some time to do.

I don't know whether to be inspired or get my check book out. How much do the tools cost because I don't have any of them at this point in time?

You could spend $250-$300 (same as install price) on tools and have EVERYTHING you need to do the job (and have tools left over ). Just plan on a full weekend the first time around, working Friday evening through Sunday evening.

That's how I got my air tools (compressor, impact, etc). Wife needed a new clutch. Pay the man $500, or do it myself, and get air tools...

well since he asked how much.

a cam and spring install is usually 200-300 add a oil pump and timing chain to that and it usually goes up to about 500+.

but I did all by my self.

valve springs are time consuming.
oil pump is hard to align with a dbl roller.

not bad at all though.

i paid about 300 in tools and supplies for my cam/spring/pump/chain/intake install. i already had an air compressor and air tools but they werent much help. you'll need some specialty tools like a vavlespring tool and pulley puller but those are cheap.
