Default Taking apart my motor, have questions

My Helms manual shows a special slide hammer tool to get the main caps off. Is this necessary? How did you remove yours? Also, do you need the special puller to remove the crank timing gear or not? ANy help? Thanks.

you don't "need" the puller for the caps. All but the thrust bearing cap, ie #3, you can thread in 2 of the main bolts just enough to get them in but not tight on the cap. Just wiggle the cap back and forth a little and pull up at the same time.

The middle cap will take a little more work as you can't wiggle it much. same procedure, i will sometimes use a ratchet extention under the "ears" on the cap to rock it up a little at a time.

You can use a standard 3 jaw puller on the timing gear.
