Default TR 224 vs MS3

I plan on doing a cam only setup soon. I already have the MS3 sitting here but I wanna know what kinda times you guys run with a MS3, and the TR224, and what are the power differences?

My setup will be
-Stock heads w/ springs and whatnot for the cam
-MS3 or TR224 cam not sure.
-2.73s for now but switching to 3.73s
-Built Tranny w/ 3600 vig
-Full boltons
-275 M/ts.
-I usually run 1/8mile. What cam do you guys think would be best and why?

I know this. But ive seen tr224 cars out run MS3 cars all day long at my local track. I just wanna know what kinda power difference would be,drivablity, and wat kinda experiences youve had with both!

Most people on this board act as if the track is the end all answer to how much power a car makes. Good track results take a lot more than just a good hp #.

I would disregard track results when looking for a good cam. Do you drive the car on the street or is it a track car?

Its my DD. And im going to pick my cam based on track results,how well it drives, and hp.
I know the MS3 makes more power. I just wanna know how much more, and how high you have to spin the motor to get that hp. If anyone has a dyno sheet of either one could u post it please?

The answer is a 228 cam or VRX3. Since it's your DD and your an auto I would say go with a smaller cam. IMO

I had a TR224/227 .563/.569 114 with some Patriot heads and went mid 11's all day. I think the 224 cams are great on the street and will hang with the bigger cams at the track. The MS4 is a peaky cam with a power band in the upper rpm range, not the best if you will spend alot of time driving on the street. But then again It really depends on the person.

I now have a 408 with 246/250 .633/.628 112 and I would concider it a big cam while others wouldnt

MS4 = 239/242, .649"/.609 111

Id vote for a 228/230 or a 230/23x should put you at 11.9 11.8 +/- .1th cam only and 2.73's

Just my .02

with that stall and depending on what you're shifting at I don't think the ms3 will be much faster at the track...it'll definitely make more peak hp on the dyno, but especially since it's your DD I'd go with the 224 unless you just want to have a big nasty sounding cam

in a short track like the 1/8th mile...i'm not sure the 20-25hp that the ms3 will make over the 224 would be much help. its all in the upper rpm.

the 224 will likely make the same torque peak, and likely more <4000rpm

i'd do as stated...bigger than 224, but smaller than the ms3

Id say with that converter and stall, the 224 would be the much better cam for 8th mile. However if you ran a 4.10+ gear and 4k+ converter, I would go with the ms3.

Custom Cam, PM Pat G---->/thread

My cam was 23x/23x .61x/.60x 110+4 LSA from Pat and I was knocking on the door of 11's with a 4.10's, smaller stall and shitty nittos. Other then that I had the same setup as you

I would say that it's more about the set up than the cam. Alot of the smaller cam guys can outrun the bigger cam guys, just because their set up works well. I would say that the MS3 would work decently with your car. If you could handle DD'ing the MS3, then I think you would be happy with your track results.

If you think the MS3 might be too big for you, then it probably is. As others have said its not all about peak power, and you could definitely get your car to run with something smaller. However, I think you would eventually decide the 224 was too small, and want to step up. Personally, I don't think DD'ing a car with a bigger cam is bad at all.

I don't have a dyno sheet scanned, but my curve isn't as peaky as everyone likes to think a big cammed car is. I make peak power at 6400rpm (404hp through an M6) out of my MS3.

I would look into altering the rest of your setup if it were my car.. Not changing anything though, I would go something in the 226/228 range. I'm running bottom elevens with a cam that size, full weight hand ported/milled 317s ls6 intake 4000 converter 373s...

224 cams are great for street cars. My custom 224 cam turns 6500 rpm no problem, has great down low torque too. More power everywhere was my goal over stock. Car setup is more important to track times than the cam.

i daily drive a vig 3200 and a 230/227 cam. my setup drives sooo much like stock. i would go with something along the lines of a torquer 2 or something in that range.

To each his own. Look at my sigs. I'm happy but also looking at your sigs, I assume you have some better than stock heads and that makes a difference also. It's all about the combo and the tune. If you have both of them dialed in then it will work pretty good but if you put that MS3 on stock heads then it's going to not work as good. IMO

Im restricted by my exhaust right now but still made some good numbers at the track. The overall dyno numbers were low, but I like the cam.

Several people have said pick a cam in between. After having a TR224 (which I loved for street driving) and now having a cam in between that and the MS3, I will say I would not want anything bigger. I lost torque, but gained a lot of HP. The MS3 would lose even more torque and probably not gain that much more HP (other than high RPM peak power). If you already have a 3600 converter, than a TR224 will be a tad small. I would think a Torquer V.2 would be ideal for your situation.
