Default Physical Signs of a Collapsed Lifter???

I've been chasing down this loud metallic tapping noise in my '01 5.3L ECSB. It will make the noise for the first couple minutes of warm up, then go away. I determined that the tapping occurs at half the speed of the crank, which leads me to think there is a valvetrain issue. I have a sneaking suspicion that it could be a collapsed lifter. I checked for exhaust leaks and didn't find any.

My question is, if I pull off the valve cover and rockers, can I push down on the lifters with the push rods to determine if I have a collapsed lifter? Will it be softer than the others? Or maybe the lifter cup will be totally bottomed out? I will end up replacing all of the lifters if this is the problem, but would like to make sure that this IS my problem before buying up the parts I need.

Thanks!
