Default longer crank bolt

I understand that the purpose of the longer crank bolt is to allow the bolt to seat in the threads to pull they pulley back on, however, i dont understand it. My buddy cammed his GTO and when using the new bolt the pulley didnt seat all the way, but from further research i've seen that you use the stock bolt to get it on the rest of the way. That being said, would the longer bolt not bottom out in the crank leaving a gap between the fully seated pulley and the head of the bolt???

The purpose of the longer bolt is to grab more crank threads before you load them by pressing the balancer on. It will not seat down all the way.

BUT THIS IS A MISTAKE. Use a proper press, either purchaed or fabricated, if you want to ensure your crankshaft won't be damaged.
