Default big cam in 5.3?

just wondering has anyone ever put a bigger cam in a 5.3, i have a little project im doing and im putting a 5.3 with a set of ported 241's and i was thinking about throwing this old cam i have in it (230/234 591/598 on a 112), would i have any clearance issues or anything like that with this cam ?

Only way you would know for sure is by measuring PTV clearance. I would have to say that is going to be a lot of cam for that motor. You may want to check over on http://www.performancetrucks.net for the cams those guys run in their 5.3's. You will probably find more info over there.

Why throw on a set of 241's and lower the compression even more?? A cam like that would really like more compression, not less.

Anyways, I just finished building a 5.3 w/ 862's milled .050 to get a 55/56 cc chamber and a 228/230 .585 trick flow cam. Compression was around 10.5, cranking compression at 205ish (438,000km bottom end, new rod bolts) across most of the board ( we had 1 cyl a little low at 160, a little bit of oil brought it up to 250psi)

heads where mild ported, victor jr carb intake and 650 vac secondary 4150. MSD timing box.

Power came on decent at 3000, picked up good at 3500, and tryed to beat the tach to 7500. In a 4500 lb 4x4 racetruck, stock stall th350 2wd, 3.73 gears and 35's. (engine test vehicle, I know, not exactly an optimised combo)

Clearance wise, you should be ok, if its been run in stock ls1's, you'd have more room with the dished 5.3 pistons.

I highly recommend a way to bump up that compression to at least 10.5, more if you can. 4.8 pistons and milled 5.3 heads should get you some bottom end power out of that 5.3.

its going in front of a 3800 converter and a 700r4 the cam was out of my 02 SS went a different route and as far as the heads i just have a lot of money in them and there just sitting on my self collecting dust, and was also think about a little boost down the road but not sure yet

That cam will be fine. I did a 5.3 with a 228/230 .595 .598 112 custom grind comp in it and it made good power for a 5.3 with a ls6 intake and stock heads w/ a t56 (370rwhp, but I think tq was in the 350s) Should be pretty nice with a stall.

What are your heads though? Are they milled any? I think stock 5.3 heads are 62cc by the time you add the gasket vs your 241s (if stock) are about 67...you may pick up some power with that cam but if you milled the 241s it would be more worth the time

I am running a 227/241 .564/.547 109 LSA in my 5.3. The lift isnt as big but it seems to run pretty good. Im not sure I would run it in a daily driver but for a show truck it works fine.
