Is it really that bad? I would be doing it this summer with all the time in the world. I would be putting on PP S2 5.7 heads from TSP, ported tb, and LS6 intake (maybe Fast...), so I would need everything off. I have not done really serious work on cars before like this, but with this place and multiple writeups, like the one on ls1howto, it doesn't look that bad. Is it? I was quoted $900 locally...insane!

It really is not that bad at all, as long as you have some mechanical knowledge. I mean all it is is following a set of steps, and just truning wrenches - not exactly rocket science. Just make sure you do everything correctly and not half @ss (like cleaning the block and threads). Best advise for a first timer is take it slow and steady and don't be afraid to ask questions.
