chain slop.
Hey guys.
Im new to the Ls1 game and i am rebuilding a 2000 block.
as i was putting the old timing chain on (which has about 30k miles on it) i noticed that it was pretty loose. thinking that it might be just worn out i ordered a Ls2 timing chain and when that had finally arrived it had just as much slop as the old timing chain. Am i missing something? the motor is a 2000 with 241 heads, and the Futral F-13 camshaft. the cam and valve train were all done by the pervious owner. So i am a little in the dark with this set up.

In my old LT1 383, I put a new chain in it when it got a different cam and about 500 miles later it had a bearing issue which sucked but when disassembled the tight chain had some slack/slop. Nothing insane but was a stock style chain, no need for any double roller stuff at that time and I noticed a good amount of slack.
A little disheartened when I saw that.
I did reuse my LS1 chain when working on my cam swap, but with such low milage is not regularly revved to the max it was fine and fairly tight for stock. ** plans are to replace it at some point. I have bearing put 5k on the set up and its been 3 years. Economy sucks.

Its completely normal, the chain is pre stretched. Much better a little on the loose side. a tight chain will just wear everything, the newer engines use a chain guide that keeps the chain under control.
