Piston Ring Selection
Can anyone recommend a set of rings for a 3.905 bore? The machinist power honing an LS1 block for me to 3.905" recommends a ring set with a "Napier" type second ring and not a "barrel" faced type (Mahle) a "hook" style ring over a standard style for...get this, better oil control. I never new compression rings could help oil control so this is news. According to the machinist, GM recommended the Napier ring to help with pre mature oil burning. I am going to use JE fordged pistons in this app. Anyone have any info/experience with this? Thanks.

Mahle makes a very affordable steel top w/ napier second ring set in a 1.5/1.5/3.0 size. The napier second ring was one of the improvements made on the 405hp 2002 LS6. Generally you have a barrel top and a reverse taper second. The napier replaces the reverse twist to improve oil control and reduce friction.
