Timing chain broke while cranking!(carnage pics added!p.2)
so i finally finished up putting in my new Tv2 cam went to crank it up for the first time, it ran for about 3-5 seconds then died. started it again ran for another 3 seconds then died, going to try again it was having trouble turning the engine over like it had a dead battery. so i swapped another battery in it, still hard to crank and then mad a slight noise so i stopped for the night. the next day i put a fresh battery in cranked it and it backfired through the intake so hard that it blew out the plug i have to block the egr. so i started tearing it back down and pulled the timing cover back far enough to see and i could see half the chain on the gear and nothing on the other half? does this seem strange to you? ive never heard of a timing chain breaking so easily? btw the chain was a new ls2 chain from rock auto. also i dont know why i did this but i also put the new ls2 timing gear that came with the kit on it, i compared it to the ls gear and everything from what i could tell lined up. could it of had something to do with that? sorry for this novel

Did you degree your cam? Check ptv? Pushrod length? Sounds to me like one of these caused the problem. More than likely the valves were sitting on the pistons when you tried to crank it.
Degreeing the cam is the best way to install it. The cam could have been ground wrong.

Of course degreeing the cam is the best way but not everyone degree it when installed my first cam I lined dot to dot but didn't have cylinder 1 tdc and it did the same thing he's describing just bent my timing chain

Ha well I guess twisted? It was f ed up... When I lined it up dot to dot last time I guess I was on the wrong stoke and.the same thing he's explain it what mine did but idk maybe a bent valve the only way is to break her down to.see

?? Really I wonder why mine did that and when I switched it around when cylinder 1 was tdc it worked?? Idk... Will it make it run different?

Thats why when I installed my heads i markwd my balancer with a razor and put a line when the crank is at TDC. Its pretty easy to remrber though. Cam dowel at 3'o Clock, Cam gear at 6, Crank gear at 12 o Clock.

You did yours at tdc? I did mine at tdc as well but the first time I installed I didn't and it was not happy I redid it with number 1 @ tdc and started good ran fine.. but someone cylinder 1 doesn't have to be tdc? I'm wondering is that true because it seems you intake and exhaust would be off right?

Ok when you have heads pulled your crank rotates 2 times to complete a 1 full rotation when cylinder 1 is all the way down the dot on the crack is up rotate it again cylinder 1 is at top dead center and the crank dot is up... So are you saying it doesn't matter if cylinder 1 is tdc or not...?? So pretty much what you guys are saying is it doesn't matter where cylinder 1 is positioned as long as its dot to.dot if that's how your installing it? Sorry for all the questions I just thought cylinder 1 had to be tdc
