Default LQ4 SS build thread

I got this car back in September of last year as an all stock 2000 SS A4. I had planned on getting a car and doing a head/cam/converter swap and since this car already had 200k on it I just decided that an engine rebuild was probably a good idea.

I got a set of LPP headers from a friend and a custom y-pipe with a cutout. Also added a tunnel mount torque arm and some LCAs. With that I got the car down to a 8.31@88.14 in the 1/8.

Then I ran across a deal on freshly machined but unassembled LQ4 and some freshly rebuilt 243s. I got both for about the same price as I could have rebuilt my short block. I had a friend do some porting on the heads for me and I found a small, cheap cam (219/230 .522/.522 114) that wouldn't be too much for the wife and kids and that would allow me to use the stock LS3 springs that came with the heads.

Got all that put together with some .040" cometic gaskets and ARP head and rod bolts one afternoon, then to my surprise my friends, JonCR96Z and zzracer, stayed up that night and went ahead and put the motor in for me.

I'm currently using JonCR96Z's Yank PT4000 and transmission. I bought a used PT4000 that was damaged in shipping. So I'm having to send that off to be rebuilt and rebuilding my stock 4L60e as well. Doing it this way allowed us to know for sure that if it didnt run good it was in the motor, as this converter/trans has went a 1.46 60' in a mild head/cam 346.

Here's clip of it idling throught the Flowmaster with the cut out closed: (The camera makes it sound a little louder than it actually is.)

And finally we got a trans cooler installed and also a ram air kit and headed for the track. With about 500 miles on the new motor it ended up running a 7.36@93. Runs were made on 275/40/17 MT drag radials on WS6 wheels and stock ZR1s up front.

Pretty happy with it. I'm gonna borrow a FAST 90 and run it next Saturday to see how that helps out. And hopefully it will loosen up some with a few more miles on it, still has the break-in oil in it for now.

Here's a rundown of all the parts so far:
