Default Oil pan gasket leak above filter.

Just finished up on my cam swap for my 2000 z28. Got it fired up without any problems and noticed oil dribbling down my oil filter. I thought at first I didn't put the filter on tight enough, but when I went to snug it up a bit more I noticed it was actually leaking immediately above the filter, from the pan gasket. Only leaks when running, but man does it leak.

Fast forward, I loosened the pan and put some RTV around the oil filter ports on the pan gasket (as best I could. Clearance was crap, the best I could do was smear it in). Put it back together and that leak was fixed, but it appeared as though the RTV on the rear cover lost its seal. So I loosened the pan again and applied RTV to the cover corners. Now it's leaking above the oil filter again.

My question: Is there anything else I haven't tried that could possibly fix this, or should I just go ahead and order a new pan gasket? I hate to tear it back apart before I could even drive it around on the new cam, but if it has to be done then so be it.

I would not put a bunch of rtv to fix that, I went through that awhile back. Too much and you get rtv balled up in your oil pick up screen...

My guess is its not aligned right, assuming the gasket was still good to begin with..

Did every bolt torque to 18ft lbs? And the rear 2 skinny to 8.8lbs? None were stripped at all?

Yep, all torqued to spec and in proper sequence per my Chilton manual. I didn't put a whole lot of RTV on it, I pretty much gave up and now I'm halfway into dropping the Kmember to put a new gasket on.

Is the gasket still riveted to the pan, has it ever been changed before?

Still riveted, with 140k. I figure with that kind of age and mileage it's lived its life.

Dang, well at least you do your own labor... So it won't really set you back other than time

Yeah, only thing is I'm missing what would have been the car's first race of the season. Looking to get it tuned and consistent before the bracket racing points series starts!
