Default replacing a valve guide

bought a set of ported 317's and they have a cracked valve guide. it appears they are 4-13 bucks a piece to replace them, Just wondering if anyone has tackled this before?

This is not a $20 repair, it is not simple as hammering the old one out and hammering the new in. Take it to a shop and get a quote.

I know a few guys who bought "professionally" ported LT1 heads and found many guides cracked from improper installation of bronze liners ended up spending $600ish to repair a complete pair of heads. Not sure what that means for an individual guide pricing other than being reasonable enough to pursue.

Why not? What else do you think needs to be done?

The guide needs to be pressed out, and a new one pressed in, then resized to the correct valve stem clearance. You cannot do this at home with hand tools.

You mean you can't just hammer one out hammer it in and drill it for valve clearance?

Yeah, sure. Go with that. Use a 3/8 drill, the extra clearance will reduce friction and make more power.

There's a local shop that uses a broach. They replaced three guides in my 243 heads for $50 and the clearance was spot on.
