Default Metal in oil, what is it?!

98 LS1 on its 2nd motor (1st was due to me fouling the pick up tube o ring install on my cam...)

2nd motor had 80k on it and now another 5k with my mods on it listed below. I noticed when checking the oil today that there was 1-2 VERY small metallic slivers on the stick. I check and they are in fact magnetic. Sticking the stick in and out several times did not net another sliver but very small metal particle flakes in it which too were magnetic.

I know the block is aluminum and I believe cam/crank bearing are copper so nothing should be magnetic. Motor runs great no noises other than valve train chatter. Oil pressure stays at top dead center, rises fine with RPMs, only after a hard run on a HOT day does it drop to 30 PSI.

Thoughts?!

Have you drained the oil and cut open the filter?

Is this it's first break in oil?? Also, do you have any heavy duty magnets around?? If you do then put them around the oil filter and run it about 20-30 minutes, then shut down and rip the filter apart to see what there is. Oh, and take pics, may help. My 2c.

Thanks a lot guys!

It is not the break in oil, oil was changed at 100 miles and 1000 miles after the block swap.

I do have 2 tranny pan doughnut magnets that I can stick on the filter.

I drained the oil today and found about 4-5 pin head sized metal pieces, none of these are magnetic or anything in the oil as I swirled my pen magnet inside the old oil and nothing came out with it.

The metal pieces that drained were NOT magnetic however not copper they were clearly aluminum.

I plan on cutting the filter open tonight after work and posting my findings via pictures.
